DR. RUSSELL W. SCHAEDLER on May 8, 2007 of Philadelphia, Pa. Born in Hatfield, PAon December 17th, 1927. Served in the US Army 1946-1947. A 1953 graduate of Jefferson Medical College, and former long time Chairman of the Department of Microbiology of the Thomas Jefferson University Medical School. He is survived by his partner Larry Bear. Interment private and to be followed by a memorial service to be celebrated atOld Christ Church in the near future. In an article by Bronwyn Robertson and colleagues (Int J Syst Evol Microbiol 55: 1199-1204, 2005), Mucispirillum schaedlerigen. nov., sp. nov., was proposed in honour of Russell Schaedler,one of the early pioneers of the study of the bacteria of the intestinal tract of mammals and the first to isolate a member of this genus (ASF 457) as part of the altered Schaedler flora(Dubos et al., 1965; Savage et al., 1968; Schaedler et al.,1965; Dewhirst et al., 1999).
