L. Joe Berry, PhD, 76, an authority on microbiology who taught at Bryn Mawr College for 30 years, died on February 26, 1987 while attending a National Research Council conference in Washington.  He lived in Austin, TX.  He received his doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin in 1939,  taught at Bryn Mawr from 1940 to 1970 and served as chairman of the college’s biology department from 1965-70 and as acting provost from 1969 to 1970.   He left Bryn Mawr in 1970 for the University of Texas at Austin, where he was chairman of the department of microbiology until 1975.
